"Onishi CHINNEN, an important Shijo-style artist, studied painting under Watanabe Nangaku, and was influenced by early Chinese
painting, by Tani Buncho's brand of Nanga, and by the bright, clear colouring of Tosa painting. Ultimately, he achieved a style
that is Shijo but with a slightly astringent flavour, both piquant and exhilarating." (J. Hillier, op.cit.)
CHINNEN was the artist of a superb illustrated book, recently sold in our gallery, Azuma no Teburi (of 1829), shown in the ARCHIVE section. Similar-style paintings by the artist are in the HARARI collection, see: - Jack Hillier (compiler), "The Harari Collection of Japanese Paintings and Drawings"; London, 1973; vol. III, pp. 504-507, no. 272. Other useful reference: - Jack Hillier, "The Uninhibited Brush"; London, 1974; pp. 315-325; see ills. no. 250 |
