A courtesan from the pleasure quarter, Shin Yoshiwara, the 'new Yoshiwara' (shown in the cartouche at upper right). The kimono is richly decorated, the principal motif being a carp ascending a waterfall. Characteristic of Eisen's work during this period (Tenpo era, 1830 - 44) is the great attention he paid to details of dress such as kimono patterns. |
