The place is Mercado in Portugal. - A woman (at bottom center) with a scarf on her head is
set against expressionistic collages of images of the city. -
This print was shown in the "Image no sakebi ('Image Shout'), "The Power of
Creative Woodcut Prins" exhibition by the Fuchu Art Museum, Tokyo, in 2012.
The artist was born in Toyama prefecture in 1910. He had studied painting with Ishikwa Toraji (1875-1964) and had taken a short course in mokuhan (woodblock printing process or technique) with Ono Tadashige (1909-1990) in 1938. - He exhibited with Zôkei Hanga Kyôkai beginning in 1935. After 1957 he became Professor at the Toyama Junior Woman's College. - Subjects of his prints were frequently taken from folk customs or fishing or farming villages. - |
