The scene illustrated here depicts the tale of revenge of the Soga brothers who had waited for eighteen years before killing Kudo Suketsune, the man responsible for their father's death. The Juban kiri of the title refers to ten men loyal to Suketsune whom the Soga brothers killed. - Here the fight is shown taking place in the rain, indicated by the long, vertical, white strokes filling the gray background of the picture, underlining the drama of the event.
