  TOSHIKATA was a Japanese-style painter and illustrator, first learned woodblock printing from Yoshitoshi, then studied Japanese-style painting with Watanabe Shotei ('Seitei', 1851-1918). The drawings shown here seem to be from the period when he was associated with Yoshitoshi and his school (c. 1880s until the early '90s). - The brush work of some of the drawings indicate a possible authorship of Yoshitoshi, but this is not certain. This group includes works illustrating Western activities during the Meiji period, and have seldom survived as preparatory drawings.
