KAWASAKI, the second post station along the route from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto represents the third print in
the series, the first being the starting point in Edo at the Nihon Bridge (Nihonbashi). Each print in the
the series carries a poem (kyoka), hence known as the kyoka Tokaido series. On a day in spring, travelers are crossing the Rokugo river by ferry boats. Along the near shore, tree trunks are seen swimming in the river. At left, a samurai and his servant are passing a tea-house. |
