Of the three shunga ehon by KUNISADA, known collectively as the "THREE GENJI", the present illustrated book was the second
in sequence, with the other two published in 1835, respectively in 1851. "In creating them, Kunisada was undoubtedly riding the Genji boom touched off by Ryutei Tanehiko's long-lived bestseller, Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji ('Bogus Murasaki, Bumpkin Genji, 1829-42), a parody of the classic Heian-priod novel, Genji monogatari ('The Tale of Genji')."
