Harukawa GOSHICHI (1776- 1831 / fl. 1810s-20s) |
Ehon Karimakura |
|
The following three album prints belong to a small group of much lesser known, and also rarer shunga works produced in the kamigata
(Kyoto, Osaka) area. They are remarkably different from those published in Edo: it is above all the color tones which are not as shining as in
Edo prints, rather more opaque because powder has been added to each color, making them more pastel. These characteristics of
kamigata-style printing are most evident in this set of prints. Harukawa GOSHICHI was born in Edo where, at the beginning of his career, he drew and published actors portraits, as well as surimono. He may also have written novels and also personally drew and carved the artwork as well. Possibly a pupil of Harukawa Eizan, from whom he took his name. In about 1818 he moved to Kyoto where he continued to write romantic novels containing illustrations by himself. Only two sets of oban-sized shunga works by the artist are known, one of which is the Ehon karimakura which we here introduce. |
