The background of the print is filled with blind printed cloud patterns and the mon ('crest') related to a chapter of Japan's most famous, 10th-century novel, by the poetess, Murasaki Shikibu (? - 992), The Tale of Genji. The fine lines of the blind printing are only partly visible in our illustration.
