"Two jungle crows (Corvus macrorhynchos) are in flight on a cold, clear night, a full moon in a gradated blue winter sky
in the distance. The contrast of the black crows against an aquamarine sky is striking. This work is one
of a series of some thirty o-tanzaku prints published by Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962); they do not have a publisher's
seal. This design is reminiscent of the famous shikishiban of 1888 by the artist Shibata Zeshin (1807-91), which illustrates
two black crows in flight against a bright orange sky." (CCC) Reference: Crows, Cranes and Camellias - the natural world of Ohara Koson, Hotei Publishing, Leiden, 2001; cat. no. 151 & check list: S 5.2. |
