The series includes fifty-two prints, designed by seven different artists, and was published between 1885 and 1890. Subject matter are famous individuals throughout Japanese history. The 'lofty ambition' (risshiki) of the series title is a Confucian concept, originally from Mencius, meaning 'righteous determination that would inspire others'. |
