This triptych depicts the attack at the Genbu Gate of Phöng-Yang during the Sino-Japanese war in the autumn of 1894. A more detail account of the events is given in the chapter, "The Phyong-Yang Campaign", in the book by N. Chaikin (see below), pp. 68-74, where on p. 73 print nos. 35-37 deal with Harada Jukichi's attack at the Genbu Gate. In our triptych we see him fighting the Chinese defenders on the city walls.
