This series of small horizontal prints consists of 59 designs, and feature a framed margin, a cartouche with the station name in kaisho (squarish calligraphy), and below it, in two columns, the artist's signature (generally, as here, Gakyojin Hokusai ga), and the name and distance of the following post-stage. The print depicts two women making batter; on the street a horse eats from a feed-bag.
According to M. Forrer (op. cit.), eight designs for the series were made by Hokusai's pupil, Yanagawa Shigenobu (1787 - 1832), who had collaborated in the series. These are signed Yanagawa ga. Except for one other design (signed: Hokusai ga), all others, like ours, are signed Gakyojin Hokusai ga.
