SANJO BRIDGE at KYOTO, the end of the Tokaido road and so the end of the journey from Tokyo to Kyoto, is print no. 55 in the series; - a view of the palace at Kyoto completes the series of fifty-six chuban-sized prints. Each print carries a comic poem ('kyoka'), hence known as the kyoka Tokaido series.
Travelers crossing the bridge to enter the town on the farther bank of the river; beyond is a wooded range, with a high mountain range in the distance.
- Note the way the bridge goes back, in violent perspective, from the center of the foreground, towards the city. -
