Gyosai gadan
'Gyosai's discussion on art and painting' |
"Gyosai gadan, apart from the biographical section, is an attempt at art history, with examples of the styles of the various schools of painting in Japan, and an account of Kyosai's own practice and techniques. The examples of Kyosai's work comprise both the finished compositions by which he would wish to be judged (for example the kakemono of a courtesan cleaning the ear of Shoki, the Demon-queller (see ill. above left), a subject that attracted many ukiyo-e artists, and also working drawings like the one illustrated above right, showing his method of drawing the outlines of the nude figure in black ink and superimposing clothes on them in red ink before creating a final version for kakemono or shita-e for the block cutters. It is a rare insight, with commentary by the artist himself, into the creation of works of art, from the first conception in the artist's mind to consummation after various stages of constructive development."
