The artist was born in Tokyo, his real name is Katsutaro, artist names: Shotei, Komei or
Hiroaki. After working at the design section in the Imperial Household Agency at the age of fifteen or sixteen,
he studied nihonga ('Japanese style painting') under his uncle, Matsumoto Fuko. Illustrated textbooks
and novels. Many prints intended for export and signed Shotei were published by Maehane-shoten.
Also produced many designs for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo from the early Taisho period
(1916-25) on. (Information gathered from the below listed publication.)
